Nicknames

Nicknames are strange, often they have an interesting backstory, they evolve and mutate, via a series of unrelated events, and people, to what becomes a nickname that a person potentially carries to the grave. Some of my personal favorites are Midnight, Trigger, Forby2 (like 4x2), Fish, and Cookie.

I have also given, or contributed to the giving, of nicknames to people. I quite enjoy bestowing majestic names upon friends and acquaintences alike and always have a few up my sleeve in case someone comes along that needs one.

Although, in recent times, I have come across people who have chosen nicknames for themselves, this disturbs me somewhat. Especially when these people then try and push these new nicknames on those around them. On occasion, I have called someone "x" and they have replied "no, it's y", I invariably then call them "x" until they never talk to me again. But my dislike for self bestowed nicknames is simply a matter of opinion, I wonder how many people actually object?
